I'm showing you this because this is how I made Kimono for my doll and I think it's pretty simple... So I hope you'll love it!
Hey, guys. Do you know that Japanese Kimono is one of the most beautiful traditional clothing in this world?
History of Kimono
Well, I guess everyone knows that kimono is Japan traditional garment. But do you know that the word "kimono" is actually means "thing to wear"...
During the Nara period(710 - 794), Japanese usually wore separate upper & lower garments. Until Heian period(794 - 1192AD), a straight-line-cut technique, known as the kimono-making method was developed. Over time, wearing kimono in layers came into fashion and they started to developed different ranges of colored kimono which represent either season or political class that one belonged to.
Layering of kimono~
Before wearing a kimono, the Japanese wear nagajuban beneath the main outer garment and only the collar will be show from beneath the outer kimono. Also they'd wear tabi socks (divided - toe socks) with zori (traditional sandals) .
So this is how and what I use to make it...
- Fabric
- Needle & thread
- Scissors
- Water soluble pen
- Sewing pin
- Sewing machine (highly recommended)
Things you might need or not...
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brush
I'm using plain colored fabric for my Barbie's kimono because I want to draw the pattern on my own. But you can go with some printed fabric if you don't feel like wanna draw the design on your own. Its up to you~
1. First, print out the printable pattern.
*Please take note : The doll I'm using is Mattel Barbie doll.*
2. Trace the pattern on the fabric of your choice using water soluble pen like this.
For part A, make a mark at this point...Do not cut!
*Make sure you leave some space between the pieces for allowances*
This is how I trace the pattern on my fabric...
3. Cut the pieces out with allowances around it carefully. Lay out in position to get ready for sewing!!!
*For the collar, set aside for later use.*
4. First, sew the sleeves and body piece together. Also the front piece with the body piece.
*sew where the red line indicated*
5. After that, sew the body pieces for the back together.
*Do not sew over the middle point*
6. At this point, if you are going to paint the design, do it now or else skip to the next step.
7. Hem the edges of the sleeves for 3cm (1.5cm from the center point each side)
8. Fold your kimono right side to right side and hold them in position with sewing pins. Sew according to where the red line is and trim off the excess fabric.
9. Turn the right side out. Now you may cut part A like this.
*I cut in this way because I need the allowances to attach the collar.*
10. Time to attach the collar. Fold the collar according to the center line, then fold the allowances in.
11. Then, attach the collar to the kimono with sewing pin. The collar shall begin at the half of the left piece and all the way round.
12. After attach the collar, hem the edges at the side & bottom of the kimono.
~Time to make Obi (belt)~
13. Cut out one or three rectangle shaped fabric. If you wish to made a simple design, you can go for one. If you want some fancy design, go for three... the reason I need three pieces is because I want to make a ribbon!
*fabric for obi is different from the one I use for kimono*
14. Fold every pieces in half and hem the wider side.
15. Turn the right side out. If you wish to paint it, do it now... otherwise move on to the next step.
16. Hem the edges of all side of the obi. If you're doing the simple version, you're done now. Otherwise, move on...
17. Now, make the ribbon.
18. At last, attach the ribbon to the obi!
And you're DONE~
Hard work behind this project..
Spend lots of time doing research for this...
