We've always been so fond of traditional clothing from all around the world... And today we are showing you all how to make the traditional clothing of Korea - Hanbok...
After making the modern hanbok for our LOL Surprise OMG Doll, we thought of making some Korean clothing for our always favorite Barbie doll as well... And since we've already made a modern style, so we decided to make it the traditional style for Barbie and it turns out easier than we thought... >.<
Do you know that the word "Hanbok" literally means Korean clothing...
History of Hanbok
Hanbok can be traced back to Three Kingdoms of Korea period...Early forms of hanbok can be seen in the art of Goguryeo tomb murals, from this time, the basic structure of the hanbok consisted Jeogori jacket, Baji pants, Chima shirt and the Po coat. It was designed to facilitate ease of movement and integrated many motifs of shamanistic nature. These basic structural features remains relatively unchanged to this day...
Well let's move on to our tutorial!!!
Things needed for this project :
- Fabric of your choice
- Scissors
- Needle & thread
- Ribbon
- Sewing machine ( highly recommended)
Step by step tutorial :
1. Start by making the chima (wrapped skirt)
this is the measurement for the skirt... Draw out onto fabric and cut them out leaving some allowances round the edges...
We gonna need extra fabric for the bust band so make it 3 cm instead of 1.5cm in total so that we can actually wrapped the whole skirt.... if that makes sense >.<
2. Make pleats...
Hem the bottom and edges for both sides beforehand... Then make pleats with sewing pin to secure in place while pinning the bust band and skirt together right side to right side...
Then sew together carefully...
I've added a piece of sheer to make it look prettier... >.<
But of course... it's totally up to you if you wish to add it or not...
3. Attach ribbons on side...
After sew on the ribbons, fold in and use sewing pin to secure in place... sew again...
And the chima is done...
Time to make Jeogori....
4. Print out this paper pattern ^.<
*please noted that this pattern is for Barbie original body type*
measure the 1cm on the up right corner to make sure it's the right size
5. Trace pattern on fabric...
Trace the (b) part of paper pattern on fabric and we are going to need 2 of that...
Cut them out with allowances on side and then pin the back right side to right side, sew them together...
6. Sew on the cuff...
Trace the (b) part onto another fabric...
I'm using the same fabric as the skirt so they look like a set... ^.<
Pin them together right side to right side and sew them together...
After that fold in and sew again...
7. Sew the back and front together...
pin the back and front piece right side to right side... then sew them together...
Trim off the excess and make a notch at the arm hole point, then turn the right side out...
8. Attach the collar onto the body piece...
I'm using the same fabric as the skirt and cuff for the collar as well~
Pin the collar on the neckline right side to right side, and then sew them together carefully...
Fold in and sew again...
Trim off the excess before continuing...
9. Hem all edges and attach ribbons on...
After hemmed all edges, put it on our model and use a water erasable pen to make a mark where we will stitch on the ribbons...
I've added a thin white ribbon for more details but it's up to you ^.<
