Quick & Easy Miniature Prawn Tutorial~

Updated: Nov 8, 2020

A LITTLE FUN FACT ABOUT PRAWN...

According to archaeologists, human have been eating prawns from prehistoric time until now...

They know this through the study of excavating "middens," deposits of shells and bones left by early civilizations. These foods weren't "discovered" but noticed as the earliest hunter-gatherers took advantage of every available food resource. For instance, people who lived near water would naturally took advantage of the foods offered by these resources.

Also we wondered if you are curious about what's the difference between prawn & shrimp???

To be honest, this question has always been in our mind and here's the ANSWER!!!

The first difference is their anatomies...

So this is a random picture we found online, and it shows that there's difference between these two which we can see from their legs...

The second difference is shrimps are most likely to be smaller in size compared to prawns...

Also, shrimps are marine creatures while prawns are strictly living in fresh water...

Enough of the talk and let's JUMP INTO the tutorial!!!

Let's see what we'll need to make this cute little prawn!!!

- FIMO polymer clay

- white

- translucent white

- translucent red

- yellow

- dark flesh

- toothbrush

- dotting tool

- needle tool

- aluminium foil

And here's the step by step tutorial~

1. First of all, mix white + translucent white together

2. Then, mix translucent red + yellow + dark flesh together

3. Roll out both color into a snake... Use a cutting tool to slightly press on the clay leaving a mark as measurement like pictures below...

The ratio of the flesh color shall be 1/3 thickness of the white...

4. After satisfied with the proportion, cut with a blade and arrange them in order of...

White - flesh - white - flesh - white....

5. After that, add a piece of flesh clay with the same thickness of the white at the very end...

This will be the tail of the prawn...

So you should have something like this by now...

6. Now this is the most tricky part.... >.<

Apply forces from all side evenly to spread out the clay... like the picture below...

*Take your time during this process as rushing might destroy the pattern...*

7. After that, cut a part of the clay for easier handling... and then, cut into even smaller pieces for the base of the prawn...

8. With a blade, carefully cut the end of the flesh tone into a triangle shape...

9. Gently roll them into a cone shape where the flesh tone end is smaller than the white end like the picture below~

10. Next, gently bend them into a semi circular shape like a prawn... ^.<

It's already look like a prawn by this stage.. But we're gonna take it further by adding more details & textures to make it look more realistic... ^.<

11. Add in texture and details with some sculpting tools like, dotting tool, needle tool, toothbrush, aluminium foil, etc....

So we included the link to this tutorial on our YouTube channel so that you can see how we create the textures...

And you're DONE~~~

*Don't forget to bake your clay... >.<... XP *
