Miniature Sakura Mochi

Updated: May 4, 2020

This a Japanese dessert which made of sweet glutinous rice and filled with red bean paste...But instead of glutinous rice, we are making this with polymer clay and we're gonna resize it just a little...

Hey, guys. I'm gonna show you how easy this was made by polymer clay...

History of Sakura Mochi

Before you read, guess when the Japanese eat this dessert...

This dessert is traditionally enjoyed by Japanese during the Hinamatsuri, AKA Japanese Girls' Day~It is to celebrate the start of Spring, also to wish good luck and health for every girls in a family.

Let's move on to the tutorial~

What I use for this mini project is...

- FIMO polymer clay

- FIMO liquid deco gel

- Acrylic paint

- Dotting tool

- Needle tool

- Blade

- Aluminium foil

- Toothbrush

- Powder

Before we start, I wanna show you guys how it really look like...

Alright, let's get back to the tutorial...

1. First, mix these 3 colors together.

2. And this is what you'll get. Divided into two portions, one 3/4 & one 1/4.

Roll out a thin snake using the smaller portion and cut into tiny pieces. Then, shape the tiny pieces into some rice-liked pattern, set aside.

For the bigger portion, roll out some ball for the base of the mochi. It should be slightly smaller than the actually size of mochi that you wish yours to be. Set aside.

3. Time to make the mochi!!! Mix some FIMO deco gel with the rice-liked clay gently as you wanna keep that rice shape.

4. Then, gently coat the mochi base with the deco gel mixture. And the mochi part is done...

5. For the leaf part, mix these two colors together.

6. And this is the base for the leaf. First, roll out the base into thin layer on a flat surface. Cut out the basic leaf shape using a blade.

7. I use aluminium foil & toothbrush to create a leafy surface before I sculpt the pattern with dotting & needle tools.

8. Gently attach the mochi to the leaf. Before I did that, I apply some powder on the surface of the leaf in case it gets too sticky.

9. Bake your finish work according to the baking instruction of the polymer clay of your choice.

10. For final touch up, I use acrylic paint to darken up the leaf so it looks more realistic. Of course, you can use pastel if you wish to...

11. Seal your finish work with glaze.

And you're DONE!!!
